All about Devon Rex
The Devon Rex, the Pixie of the Cat world, oversized ears on an elfin face with almond shaped eyes and an impish, naughty expression. This adorable combination can only hint at the fun personality within, a cross, some say, between a cat, a dog and a monkey They are fun and fun-loving, with a relaxed and social attitude rarely associated with cats. Delightfully silly in their antics, Devons are interested in everything and everyone around them. Their playful nature means Devons easily learn tricks and are always up for a game of hide-and-seek, chase or fetch. We spend many, many hours playing 'fling the flower' with one of our Devons she's a fetch maniac!
This unique breed possesses intensely loyal, human loving qualities. A person must be prepared to be owned by a Devon. A Devon will eat with you, sleep with you, and spend a great deal of time on your shoulder purring. They will follow you around the house, sit by your feet, or jump on your lap the minute you sit down. A Devon will accompany you on your household chores, happily trilling and chirping as they look for ways to help! Children and Devons are naturals as best friends and tireless playmates. You will never be surprised to find your Devon tucked in bed with you, snuggled underneath the covers or settled in a deep sleep on your pillow. Devons remain kittens at heart forever, and their loving nature connects them deeply with the whole family.
The social nature of the Devon makes them unsuited to spending long periods of time without companionship. Devon’s do not discriminate in terms of the company they keep. They do very well with people, other Devon’s (often creating a “Devon pile”). Other Cat breeds and even calm Dogs.
Your Devon will be a food hound. Whether it is your traditional Sunday lunch or the more unusual like Strawberry Jam! be prepared to guard your dinner plate from the fast and cunning Devon paw. They never turn down a meal and would be more than happy to assist you with yours.
The appearance of the Devon Rex is far from ordinary, given their long necks, ridiculously big ears, and curly coat They really are 100% Cat. Adult Devons will average six to nine pounds, with males heavier than females. The coat may vary over the life of the cat, with some kittens dropping much of their coat (moulting) during their early development, and some adult coats changing seasonally with the weather. Devons are low maintenance. Despite the myth, Devons are not hypoallergenic. They do shed, although their unique coat may make the hair less noticeable than that of other cats. While some people with animal allergies can tolerate Devons very well, anyone with pet allergies should arrange to spend some time in a Devon only household before deciding if they are the right Cat for you.
Devon Rex are a natural mutation, despite looking like they arrived with E.T. They originated in Devon, England, in the late 1950s when a Miss Cox found that a stray cat in her care had given birth to a rather odd looking curly coated kitten. Delighted with the kitten’s elfin appearance and wavy curls, she named him Kirlee , the founding father of this unique breed. All Devon Rex can trace their ancestry back to Kirlee.
Kittens are usually available at the age of 14 weeks, by then they have had sufficient time with their Mother and littermates to be well socialized and old enough to be fully vaccinated and neutered.
Devon Rex are not suited to an outdoor life, It is highly desirable to keep your Devon indoors and provide acceptable surfaces for the natural behavior of scratching and climbing. There are many good suppliers of quality cat furniture, scratching poles and climbing frames, essential for maintaining a healthy, long and joyful life. Many owners provide their cats with a safe outdoor Catio enclosure for fresh air and playtime.
